| Abbeyglen Castle Hotel is an exclusive 4-star Irish castle hotel providing luxury accommodation and unbeatable service - ideal for a real Irish vacation. Located along the famous Sky Road and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean , the Alpine-like village of Clifden provides a beautiful setting. With the backdrop of the Twelve Bens mountain range, nestled in the heart of Connemara on the West coast of Ireland , Abbeyglen Castle Hotel is the ideal destination for those stress free vacations. The Hughes Family owns and operates the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel today; they are renowned for the quality of their gourmet cuisine and the luxury of accommodations. The Abbeyglen Castle was built in 1832 by John d'Arcy of Clifden Castle , 33 years before Mitchell Henry built Kylemore Abbey in 1865 and seven years before d’Arcy’s own death in 1839. D 'Arcy, who founded Clifden in 1812, was considered a leader of the community and was frequently consulted by the local constabulary in time of trouble or unrest. F ollowing d'Arcy's death, his son Mitchen sold the property to the Irish Church Mission Society in 1854. As a result of the Famine the estate hit troubled times and the property fell derelict. I n 1969, the J oyce family, then owners, sold the property to the H ughes family who; through the years, have improved the castle and gardens to their present state. Although this 4-star hotel has a fairytale façade, it did not originate as a castle. Dating back to 1832, Abbeyglen began as a country home and later became a hotel; the castellated turrets and battlements were added in the past 30 years. The regal façade is carried through in the public areas and restaurant/bar, with elaborate chandeliers, arched windows, Gothic-style furnishings, and the music of a Steinway piano. To add to the aura, traditional afternoon tea is a specialty. Facilities include a heated outdoor swimming pool, sauna, solarium, and tennis court. In addition, guests are welcome to stroll the 12 acres of gardens and parklands of this secluded setting on the edge of Clifden. |
