Formerly the residence of the Herbert Family-the Earls of Pembroke, Cahernane House dates back to the 17th Century. Two brothers, members of the Pembroke family, whose ancestors had fought on the Yorkist side during the War of the Roses, came to Killarney in 1656. One brother was given the great Muckross Estate and the second the smaller properties of Currens and Cahernane. History tells us that by 1872 the rent roll was declining as a result of the pressure by the land league under the presidency of Charles Stewart Parnell. This organization took up the cause of the Irish peasants who had long been oppressed by their British landlords. Henry Herbert, like most Irish landlords, was determined to maintain appearances and to do so kept carriages, horses, boats, boatmen, gardeners, gamekeepers and a great many servants. In 1877 he pulled down the old family mansion, one of the few remaining Queen Anne buildings in Ireland, and in its place he built a more modern residence - now the Cahernane House Hotel. The Herbert family maintained these estates for five generations.

Cahernane House is situated on its own parklands on the edge of Killarney's National Park, an area of outstanding beauty with it's untamed landscape of mountains, lakes and woodland walks, and it is only 10 minutes walk from Killarney town. The last quarter mile to the Cahernane House Hotel is through a tunnel of greenery that frames its long private avenue - an approach that helps you to find a slower, sweeter tempo in time with its tranquillity. On the house grounds there is croquet, billiards, hard court tennis, garden walks and fishing. Locally there is golf, hill walking, horse riding and biking with Killarney's beauty spots only a short distance away, as are many championship golf courses.
