| Galway 's most distinguished visitors have stayed at the Great Southern. Regular visitors to the hotel will be glad to know that the large open fire, traditional afternoon tea, and the tinkling of the grand piano in the background are still features in the newly refurbished lobby. Whether travelling on business or pleasure, the range of guest room facilities and sheer luxury of the rooms is a real treat. Views of the Galway skyline combine with excellent facilities in the leisure centre, and the range of dining options and bars in the hotel are sure to impress. Having re-opened in April 2003 after an extensive refurbishment the hotel combines modern facilities with old world charm and opulence. Situated in the heart of Galway city, the Great Southern Hotel offers the ideal place to stay, be it on business or pleasure. During 2003 the hotel underwent an extensive re-investment programme which concentrated on extending the guest rooms and enhancing their facilities and the range of services on offer in the hotel. The result is a unique combination of Victorian elegance and modern luxury. The guestrooms are spacious, opulently decorated and supported by 21st century technologies. There are also guest rooms catering for people with a disability. Once you step through the front door of the Great Southern Hotel Galway, you enter an oasis of calm sophistication and elegance. After the €8 million re-investment programme a transformation has taken place in Galway ’s most famous hotel. There is a wonderful choice of dining options. Afternoon Tea is served in the lobby, where a tempting selection of pastries and cakes awaits our guests. It’s easy to see how this tradition has lasted over 100 years. The hotels’ cocktail bar “Croi na G”is where a pre-dinner drink is most enjoyed. It’s leather furniture and mahogany woodwork creates an old world feel. The Oyster Room is an elegant spilt-level dining room complemented by a magnificent bog oak sculpture – the Celtic Wishing Tree created by a local artist. The Oyster Room focuses on the best of local produce and cuisine. There is something on the menu to suit everyone’s taste and appetite. An Irish Coffee after dinner is recommended as Joe Heskin, the Head Waiter is a world champion Irish Coffee Maker. O’Flaherty’s Pub in the basement of the hotel is one of Galway ’s favourite pubs. O’Flaherty’s serves carvery lunch and an extensive evening menu. All sports are shown live on the large screens and TV’s with surround sound. Live entertainment every Friday and Saturday night. |
