Tinakilly House

Ti na Coille - House of the Wood - a Victorian mansion steeped in history, Tinakilly was built by the British government in 1883 for Captain Robert Halpin, commander of "The Great Eastern" and mariner supreme who laid 2,600 miles of telegraphic cable in 1866, joining Europe to America. Attracted by the gracious architecture, wonderful sea views and romantic gardens, William & Bee Power decided to purchase and undertake the renovation of what has become one of Irelands most romantic secret hideaways. In the new Millennium, the next generation of Powers took their place at the helm and Tinakilly continues to welcome the guests who return again and again to escape and relax.

An elegant oak-lined avenue leads up to Tinakilly House, which is enveloped by seven acres of pleasure gardens overlooking the Irish Sea and Broadlough Coastal Lagoon. The stunning sea views, romantic gardens and surrounding hinterland of Tinakilly capture but a small slice of the magnificence of county Wicklow. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the county known as "The Garden of Ireland", boasts exquisite and highly acclaimed gardens such as Mount Usher and Powerscourt. Enjoy a stroll through the 19th century gardens, which have been mapped to include the "Foxes Wood", the "Badger Walk", the rose garden & the herb garden, the tennis court and the croquet lawn. In Captain Halpin's time, there were 20 people working in the rose garden alone! Tinakilly have a slightly smaller team in the garden these days but you are invited to walk a while and enjoy the serenity.

Services: Rooms & Dining

The elegant bedrooms reflect the Victorian period and also provide all modern comforts. The period rooms of the west wing feature four poster and half tester canopy beds. In the east wing, most of the antique appointed Junior Suites and Captain Suites offer breathtaking views over the Irish Sea whilst the remainder offer sweeping views of the gardens. Or, for sheer indulgence, enjoy the sumptuous Admiral's State Room. Tinakilly House Hotel pride themselves on attention to detail and look forward to providing a comfortable environment for your stay.

While Tinakilly is a true reflection of the Victorian period, it's kitchen prides itself on the fine blend of modern and traditional cuisine. Fresh fish, game and Wicklow lamb are provided locally and Tinakilly's own herb gardens supply the kitchen. The menu changes frequently to reflect what is freshly available locally and, in old Irish fashion, all foods including breads, jams, chutneys and preserves are prepared by a highly skilled kitchen staff. An award winning wine list features not only the traditional Bordeaux and Burgundies, but also a broad range of exciting new world wines, which give its cellar a truly international flavour and offers the perfect complement to your meal.
