Dromoland Castle has long been known as one of the top luxury hotels in Ireland and probably among the best castle hotel anywhere in Europe. Well located for visiting golfers wishing to play the fabled links at Lahinch and the newer Greg Norman course at Doonbeg, Dromoland's own course was for the most part overlooked and regarded as something of a "filler" parkland layout. But big changes dramatically took place in April 2004, when Dromoland Castle's New Course opened for play. After a $6.5 million investment and the cooperative design efforts of Ron Kirby and Joe Carr, the New Course is something quite special -- deceivingly attractive to look at, but with teeth that surprise and befuddle those who may be anticipating just another scenic walk in the park. Spectacularly beautiful from start to finish, this is the kind of course that will distract the eye at every hole as it winds its way through the 16th-century Dromoland estate. Roaming through woodlands, alongside lakes and across streams, the aesthetics are about as attractive as one could ever hope to find; yet the layout still succeeds in presenting a stiff challenge from the back tees and along each of its 6,845 yards. But generous consideration has also been given to the less accomplished player. With three tee positions, playing from the forward tees subdues the course considerably, providing even high handicappers with a round every bit as enjoyable as those who take the far sterner test from the back. Many courses lay claim to being championship layouts and, even before opening, Dromoland is doing the same. The difference is the New Course, with its length and challenges, is unquestionably of championship quality. It will not be too long before Dromoland hosts its first important event, and rumor has it that it is already being considered by a number of significant tournaments. There is no question that magic has been performed at Dromoland Castle and with the New Course, yet another classy layout is added to Ireland's constantly growing inventory of top quality courses. If you want to double your pleasure, include a couple nights' stay at the castle and be pampered in truly regal style -- there's no better way to conclude any trip to Ireland.
