Greetings from Ireland
Spring has Sprung!

Welcome to the April 2007 issue of Deals and Tales, Authentic Ireland’s monthly missive from us over here to you out there. In Ireland we say April comes in like a lion but goes out like a lamb. We’re referring to the weather of course. This year April arrived like confident lamb already eager to shed its woolies: blue skies and warm sunshine day after day. We’re enjoying every minute of it because we’re pretty sure the lion is out there, waiting, crouching in the long grass ready to pounce.

This month we’ve got a Paddy’s on Achill update and we continue our “When in…” series with a look at Killarney, Ireland’s second most visited town or city after Dublin. The things we do for love.

Saddle up, here we go…

  • Paddy’s on Achill – 2007
  • Specials – Treasures of the West Tour
  • When in - Killarney
  • Authentic Referral program
  • Next issue: stuff to look forward to
  • Admin: on/off this merry-go-round, small print, etc

Travel Tales: Paddy's on Achill Island 2007

For all of you who survived Paddy’s Day 2007 in Ireland a hearty congratulations. Wasn’t that something? Wow! I have never seen weather like that before in March. Snow, hail, sleet, 80mph winds – it was crazy! No wonder the snakes left. I was close to leaving myself. Or I would have if I could have seen past my face. What am I talking about, most of the time I couldn’t even feel my face. But I’m pretty sure it was there because it still managed to drink my wallet dry.

If you were in Ireland for the first time three weeks ago please don’t get the wrong impression. Please. please don’t think that weather was anywhere near normal. It wasn’t. In fact just a week later the sun was shining and some brave young people were sporting t-shirts. The contrast couldn’t have been greater.

Still, I am happy to report the pipe bands of Achill did their duty regardless. They walked the length and breadth of the island in their kilts, bleating out marching tunes while drifts of snow accumulated in the crooks of their elbows and Atlantic waves crashed about their ears. Well done lads! You made us all proud.

When in Killarney

Why should you never give a Kerryman a lunch break? Because it would take too long to re-train him afterwards. How do you recognise a Kerry business man? He’ll be the one wearing pin-striped Wellingtons. Almost every country has a section of the population that they like to tell jokes about. In Ireland we tell jokes about people from County Kerry. Not because they are stupid. In fact they have a reputation for the opposite. The main reason we tell jokes about them is that we are jealous. They have the cheek to call their county the Kingdom, yet there are few in Ireland who would dispute the aptness of the name. The origins of the name have been lost, but that doesn’t matter – Kerry feels like a Kingdom. Soaring mountain ranges, desolately beautiful valleys, crystal lakes and a spectacularly rugged coastline alternatively lashed and lapped by the Atlantic Ocean. Kerry has it all.
