Beautiful scenery abounds – including the highest mountain range in Ireland.
The Meeting Point for the walk is at 11.00am outside O'Sullivan’s Bike Shop at the end of New Street, Killarney (opposite St. Mary's Cathedral) and only 300 metres from the centre of town.
Killarney guided walk is available every day of the year!
11:00am Walk
This two hour walk takes you through one of Ireland’s most scenically beautiful locations - The Killarney National Park. The Park encompasses the world famous Killarney Lakes, and the highest mountain range in Ireland – The MacGillicuddy Reeks.
But this walk is not all about scenery – you’ll also visit ancient archaeological sites like the old copper mines (dating back 4000 years), the 6th century monastery ruins on Innisfallen Island and the 15th Century Ross Castle. See where Brother Cudda slept for 200 years, where Queen Victoria visited in 1861 and where President Charles De Gaulle of France stayed in 1969. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the set location of the award winning movie, Ryan's Daughter (starring Robert Mitchum).
The flora and fauna of the National Park will be of great interest to nature lovers. Keep an eye out for our native red deer, or the Japanese Sika introduced here in the mid 19th Century. Unusual trees growing in the Park include the Arbutus (Strawberry Tree) Fuscia and Monte Rey Pines. You might even see the rare Kerry cow on your walk! (brought to Ireland by the Celts). In season, you will also see abundant local vegetation including wild mint, garlic and myrtle.
