The route of this tour takes in Dublin’s most famous landmarks. The location of the first Viking settlement in 841 AD at Woodquay is of course, a must! Thereafter, sights visited include Dublin's two famous City Cathedrals - St. Patrick's and Christchurch, Trinity College, The Custom House, The Four Courts, Trinity College, Dublin Castle, Temple Bar, The Halfpenny Bridge and the most recent addition to Dublin’s skyline - The Spire.
The climax of the tour sees the Duks splash into the water at the newly developed Grand Canal Docklands where the recording studios of U2 and much more are explored.
The Duks (DUKWs) are ambhipious vehicles designed and produced by The General Motors Corporation in America. The vehicles were originally built as a solution to the problem of landing thousands of troops and supplies on the D-Day beaches of Normandy in 1944. DUKWs were designed to withstand driving onto beaches in 15 foot seas. In addition to carrying up to 30 troops or 2 1/2 tons of cargo, DUKWs were also used in other capacities. For example, machine guns could be added to the DUKW and it could then be used as a firing platform! It was this versatility that made the DUKW perfect for the planned Allied invasion of Europe, and indeed the DUKW was also successfully used in Allied operations in the Pacific Theatre and Sicily. About 22,000 DUKWs were originally built, but only a few hundred are still in operation today.
Why not take a trip on our unique Viking Splash Tour and experience a truly incredible vehicle of monumental historical importance?
Meet the Vikings who will guide you on your raid around Dublin!
The Vikings
The Vikings are often portrayed as illiterate, uncultured barbarians who evinced more interest in plunder than in poetry. In fact, the Vikings left behind a great number of documents in stone, wood and metal, all written in the enigmatic symbols known as runes. They relied on these symbols not only for writing but also to tell fortunes, cast spells, and provide protection. Viking Splash Tours now invites you to meet your Viking crew, those adventurers who will guide you on your raid around Dublin city!
Robert the Rapacious
Never before had the Celts seen a half-man, half-beast viking! Robert the Rapacious was a mythical Viking warrior of terror and horror, burning and pillaging every village and hovel he came across.
One fine Spring day, many seasons ago, Robert the Rapacious was pillaging a lowly mud-hovel of hideous villager Celts. While bashing in the heads of unsuspecting societal dregs he was set upon by the infamous Lynn the Red! They engaged in a fearsome battle until a representative from the "Viking Splash Tours Guide Social Club" intervened and through intelligent discourse showed them the error of their violent ways. Thus followed a momentous board meeting wherein were discussed the wages and terms of employment for the notorious Viking Splash Tours Group...
You may find the sinister and evil Robert the Rapacious laying seige to a nearby urban local near you, be it Coolock, Ballsbridge, Raheny, or any other, but you will be sure to find him (and be sure to run!) on the Viking Splash Tour of Dublin City!
Vinny the Voracious
The newest member of the Viking crew, Vinny the Voracious was once Viking Ambassador to the United Nations but was forced to step down after an altercation involving another ambassador. Before this unfortunate occurence, Vinny was immensely powerful at the UN, introducing legislation that forced all UN officials to do a Viking roar every second Friday of the month. Although a little sad to leave his political career behind, Vinny is now determined to gain a name for himself as a leader of Viking raids around Dublin city.
Vinny can't wait to see you on board the Viking Splash Duks- just don't mention the UN!
Rory the Rebellious
Sometimes called "The Scourge of the Celts" (though never to his face), Rory the Rebellious once engaged in a Viking Roar so loud the lightbulbs in every traffic light on O'Connell Bridge blew out simultaneously. A film adaptation of this event, starring several high profile Hollywood movie stars, is currently in production and is due to be released in the not too distant future.
Feared by Celts and traffic lights across the city, Rory the Rebellious hopes to see you soon on the Viking Splash Duk fleet.
Lito the Legendary
Lito the Legendary came to the attention of the Viking Splash organisation when he set the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a renovated Viking longship in 1998. Leaving his days on the seas behind, Lito the Legendary now drives fellow Vikings around Dublin city.
Legendary by name, legendary by driving nature, Lito hopes to welcome you aboard soon!
Andrew the Great
Andrew the Great, formerly Andrew the Alright, graduated to level of "Great" after setting the Viking Splash record for most raids around Dublin recorded in a day. The number of raids? 276. Since that day, the moniker has stuck and Andrew the Great has repeatedly attempted to better his record.
Alas, he has been unsuccessful...thus far. Two consecutive days of 275 raids in July of last year were not good enough for Andrews high standards- he hopes to top 300 raids in the coming season. He looks forward to seeing you on board soon, helping him reach Greater heights.
Jimmy the Gallant
Famed for his courageous exploits both in Ireland and further afield, Jimmy the Gallant now braves the Dublin streets to bring fellow Vikings on raids around the city. Local legend has it Jimmy the Gallant once rescued a lost canoeist, stranded in a fountain in St. Stephen's Green Park after he took a wrong turn at the mouth of the River Liffey.
The Gallant one hopes to see you jumping aboard a Viking Splash raid soon!
Lynn the Red
On dark and stormy nights, when the lights are cold and the clan are gathered, huddling together for warmth, tales are told of Lynn the Red and her terrible Viking raids! Oh the Horror! Oh the Terror!
