Cong, County Mayo
On The Map: Cong is a pretty little village located in County Mayo that receives most of its notoriety for being the shooting location for the 1951 classic film, The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. In fact, the Quiet Man museum is one of the town’s most visited attractions. Fans will recognize the ground floor of the museum as being a replica of the ‘White-o-Mornin’ cottage from the film. There are also Quiet Man Walking Tours and Cong Ghost Tours for enthusiasts of the film. Beyond The Quiet Man, Cong is famous for being the home of Ashford Castle, one of Ireland’s most luxurious authentic castles. The ruins of Cong Abbey are definitely worth of a visit. This 12th century Augustinian monastery was established by Turlough O’Connor, High King of Ireland, and is steeped in all kinds of history. There are plenty of things to do in Cong from nature trails to Ireland’s School of Falconry. There is most certainly something for everyone who visits this historical and very unique town.
