On The Map: Newmarket-on-Fergus is located in County Clare in the west of Ireland. Until 2003, the main N18 road connecting Limerick & Galway passed right through town, creating crazt traffic jams! Nowadays the town is easi;y accessed via the R472 road, an exit on the new M18 motorway.
Newmarket-on-Fergus lies on flat land between the estuaries of the Rivers Shannon and Fergus – an area steeped in history. The town was reputedly named after the horse racing centre in England by Lord Inchiquin, but this is most likely a local myth! In March 1854, about two miles from the centre of the village, an immense amount of gold was found in what appeared to be a hastily hidden trove. Concealed in a stone chamber, the find became one of the most famous of its kind in Ireland. The town has several small shops and public houses. The proximity of Shannon Airport, and the presence of several places of interest nearby (Bunratty Castle, The Burren & The Cliffs of Moher, to name a few) brings a healthy level of tourism to the area
Dromoland Castle & Estate:
Dromoland Castle is one of Ireland’s grandest hotels and also one of its best-loved. The ancestral home of the O’Briens, barons of Inchiquin and direct descendants of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, it is one of the few Irish estates tracing its history back to Gaelic royal families. Today, Dromoland is an oasis of tranquility. The grandeur of the castle itself, its magnificent furnishings and the surrounding lakes and parkland offer guests an experience almost impossible to find at other luxury hotels. It is a truly enchanting place.
