I want you to do something for me. I want you to remember your favorite smell. The smell of grandma’s freshly baked homemade cookies, or your first meal at home after being away at college for so long. Let’s be honest, mom’s cooking is way better than ramen noodles any day. It could possibly be the smell after a really hard rainstorm in the middle of the forest, and even something as simple as just being outside and smelling the fresh air.
Now, imagine that one thing that is your favorite feeling. The soft touch of your newborn child, the wind blowing gently through your hair as you are getting pushed higher on your swing, or even the slobbery kisses of a puppy. It could possibly be the first cool touch of water on a hot day during the summer. Nothing is better than that.
Finally, think about that one sound that you can’t get out of your head that always reminds you of something pleasant. It is the laughter of your family around the campfire during camping trips, or the loud crack of fireworks over the water during the Fourth of July. Perhaps it might be the rev of the engine of your old car that you used to drive around school after you got your license. Back when you thought you were the coolest person in the school because you actually got to drive when no one really could. It is that old song that comes on the radio that reminds you of driving around in your car with friends on nights out, singing it as loud as you can and not caring that you are extremely out of tune.
All of these things in life bring the most indescribable, euphoric sensation one can imagine. It might have been the day you finally graduated from that small town where no one ever leaves, or when you finally realized that person you grew up doing everything with was the love of your life. Maybe it was the day you walked your daughter down the aisle to give her away to the man who it took countless dates and awkward conversations for you to finally realize that he was good enough for your little girl, or perhaps when that special person came home from battle and you finally got to run into their arms.
All of these things can be a reminder of millions of memories or inspire you to create a million more. They can bring a certain indescribable feeling that no amount of words can begin to describe. That is what it is like for me when I think of Ireland. What intrigues me the most is how I have never been there, but it can make me have all these different unfathomable feelings. There is no amount of words I can use to explain how much I want to go there, but the one that truly demonstrates my desire to go to this land frozen in time, is home.
