Oh, Ireland, why do you call to me? Is it the lush green landscapes I see in pictures? Is it the medieval castles that beg to be explored? Is it the music and the pub atmosphere that just seem so welcoming? Perhaps it’s the accent that has intrigued me for as long as I can remember.
What can one say about a country that has produced such incredible classic authors as Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, and Yeats? Let’s not forget such modern authors as Frank McCourt or Roddy Doyle! What kind of magic must exist in a place that spurned the imaginations of such great writers?
And let’s not forget the music such as U2, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, The Irish Rovers, The Chieftains, and James Galway! I could go on but you get the idea. I can only imagine what hidden treasure one might find playing in a pub somewhere while enjoying a drink with friends.
Speaking of drinks and food while we’re at it, let’s not forget classics like Guinness and Jameson, and a great cup of tea. And the food! Being a fan of the Irish cheese and butters we can get here in the states, I imagine falling deeply in love with true, fresh Irish cheese and butter on freshly made soda bread. And to keep things somewhat healthy, fresh seafood that I understand is brilliant!
How lovely it would be to drive across the countryside from coast to coast and take in the natural beauty that Ireland has to offer. From the rugged coastline to the farmlands, Ireland appears to be a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach and in those green rolling hills, perhaps a leprechaun is hiding somewhere!
As history buffs, my husband and I would love the opportunity to explore old castles, museums and cemeteries, giving us a chance to explore his familial roots as well as quench our thirst for knowledge. The rich, vibrant history of Ireland will give us a lifetime of memories.
Ireland has come to be a mythical place in our minds full of music, food, history, heritage and imagination, and perhaps even romance? As recent empty nest parents, we are having so much fun exploring our surrounding areas here in Northern California, but would love to branch out and see more of the world. This vacation would give us the opportunity to put those first stamps in our passports, and have an amazing adventure together!
I can’t believe I almost forgot to mention our favorite movie is set in Ireland, no not the sweeping saga of Far and Away, nor the gritty drama of In the Name of The Father, or depression of Angela’s Ashes, nor the musically brilliant Once, but the 1991 Alan Parker classic The Commitments which is brilliant! What could be better than a group of Irish youth singing soul classics and doing it so well!
Winning this trip would be a dream come true for us, a chance to get out and see the world, explore the roots of my husband’s family, and spend much needed time together enjoying all of the things that make life worth living.
