Mark Twain once said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” I have had wanderlust since I was 16 and took my first ever plane ride alone from Dallas, Texas to Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Although I’ve grown intrigued with the idea of exploring the luscious green scenery of Ireland, it has never been one of my top dreams. However, my 23-year-old sister Lauren has been passionate about visiting Ireland since we were kids. I never understood why because we didn’t know anyone who had ever been. Even so, she would ramble on about visiting the rolling hills and beautiful castles someday. I watched one of my favorite movies PS I Love You and decided it was a beautiful place worth looking into. I didn’t take it as seriously as her and only wanted to go to meet the hot men with sexy accents that are rated as some of the friendliest people in the world. I hoped to drink a few good beers, explore the vastness of the hills and ocean until I felt small, banter with the locals, and break out of my mundane college routine with an adventure of a lifetime. I had always hoped to experience this with my sister, who is equally my best friend. See, our parents divorced when we were kids. Although we grew up very nicely, we never took family vacations like my friend’s families did. I dreamed that one day my sister and I would go and have a family vacation of our own one day when we could afford it. However, these dreams were on the back burner because I had college and other dreams and life goals to fulfill. This dream has now been moved to the forefront of my mind recently though. See my sister’s freshman year of college she was diagnosed with Lupus. It’s an autoimmune disease and although she is healthy enough, she also has a lot of bad days where she is just tired and sore. But she didn’t let it get her down and now is in graduate school at Texas Tech for speech pathology after maintaining a 4.0 gpa. Her Junior year of college she fell in love with the man of her dreams and got engaged. They decided to postpone the wedding until they finished undergrad. I remember she was so excited because they were planning to have their honeymoon in Ireland and her dream was going to finally come true. However, this summer her dreams came to abrupt halt when she discovered her fiance was cheating on her because she wasn’t fun all the time with her Lupus. Now, my ultimate goal is to get my sister to Ireland and bring some joy back into her life. She is the most loving and caring person I know and deserves this trip. I don’t have enough money saved up yet to get us there so this free trip would be a dream come true for both of us. Please help me make my sister’s dream come true!
It’s true, Ireland’s people are among the friendliest in the world, the history is some of the richest, and the landscapes are some of the most beautiful.
