There was an Irishman, a pretty woman, and an Englishman riding in a train together through the rolling hills of Ireland. The pretty woman was sitting between the Irishman and the Englishman when the train went through a tunnel. There was complete darkness, and then a kissing sound followed by a slap. When the train came out of the tunnel the Englishman was clutching his check that appeared to have had a big red hand print on it. The Englishman thought to himself; the pretty woman must have mistaken him to be the kisser and slapped him for it even though it must have been the Irishman. The pretty woman thought to herself; the Englishman and the Irishman must have tried to kiss her, missed and kissed each other. In response the Irishman slapped the Englishman. The Irishman thought to himself; if this train goes through another tunnel he can make another kissing sound and slap the Englishman again.

Ireland is a lot like the scenario on the train. Not as hostile but a land full of surprises, a colorful culture, fascinating myths, legends, fairies, and a hint of humor. I want to experience the richness and diversity of the beautiful tapestry that makes up the Emerald Isle. Go to the Guinness Store, where every day is a lovely day for a Guinness. Eat fish and chips wrapped in newspaper that is so hot vinegar is required to cool it down. Visit Trinity College and be in awe of the Book of Kells. Pull a muscle in attempt to kiss the Blarney Stone just to have the luck of the Irish on my side. Stay in a majestic castle and sleep in splendor of a bygone era. Get lost in a vast country side, where words fail to describe such beauty only your eyes can comprehend. Feel small against the Cliffs of Moher, and watch the waves come crashing in with awesome beauty. Hang out in the Temple Bar, and enjoy traditional folk music that over flows into the streets. Be amazed by the natural wonder of the Giant’s Causeway. Witness the age old craftsmanship of the stunning Waterford crystal. Discover and appreciate the diverse influences that make the Irish way of life so full of character and excitement. Have an adventure so grand, when thought upon a smile comes across my face.

What this trip means to me, is hope. A few years ago my husband developed necrotizing pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is an important organ in the digestive system it produces enzymes necessary to break down food and control blood sugar. Necrotizing pancreatitis is when the pancreas becomes so enlarged that the tissue on the pancreas dies and forms cysts. Surgical intervention is normally required to remove the cyst to prevent infection or to remove infected tissue. Needless to say it’s been a challenging and difficult couple of years. I felt a type of fear that rattles a person to their core. His illness wreaked havoc on his digestive system, after four major surgeries, almost starving to death, and living in a hospital for two years he was listed for a multi-visceral, transplant. At this point there might be a question of what this has to do with the trip and hope. We were going to go to Ireland, but he became ill. Our plans were push back, and back, and back again. With everything that has happened and the current situation; Ireland has become a dream not a reality. To go to Ireland is more than a want, it’s a longing. To take this trip brings hope, a hope for better things to come. A pursuit of happiness one might say. I want to make the most out of life, take journeys, and make enough amazing memories to fill a life time. This trip represents us moving forward, and making a dream possible.
