I want to visit Ireland not for myself, but for my wife Anna. Since having the privilege of making her my wife almost five years ago, it has been a personal aspiration of mine to be the best husband and friend I can be for Anna. My desire is to show her how much her love, selflessness, support, companionship, and partnership in our marriage truly mean to me. As a husband, I struggle with the insecurity of feeling like I have never been able to properly thank her for everything she is and does for me on a daily basis. This is exacerbated by the fact that, although we are blessed to not be in need of food, clothing or shelter, our current careers do not financially allow for us to do many “big things” together. I have worked as hard as I can and do the best job possible to be able to create special moments and memories for us, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be able to plan and go on smaller, local vacations with my wife. But the true desire of my heart is to give her the gift of a lifetime – a gift that she has been dreaming about since she was a child.
I must admit, I was a little perplexed when I initially found out that Ireland was the one place that Anna wanted to visit more than any other in the world. We are both born and raised in inner-city Philadelphia, both children of 1st & 2nd generation Puerto Rican descent, with no personal or familial connection to “The Emerald Isle”. But as I got to know more about the woman that would one day become my wife, it began to make more sense. Anna has always been drawn to and fascinated by the natural beauty and history of our Earth. I can see her eyes light up while looking at picturesque landscapes, at the beauty of a castle with a legacy and a grand story within its great walls, and at a stunning sky. But I’ve only been able to see her witness these marvels through other people’s eyes: through books, magazines, movies, and pictures. And Anna LOVES movies! She is usually drawn to stories of fantasy, royalty, magic, and love. Whether it’s a classic movie filmed or set in Ireland (The Princess Bride, Tristan & Isolde, Braveheart), or a newer romantic comedy (Leap Year, which I actually enjoyed!), the genuine reaction and audible “AAAWWW” that come from her make me smile every time. I can only imagine the look on her face and the feeling in her heart if she were able to experience these beautiful things in real life!
On a personal note, I enjoy a good beer more than most things in life! Although my wife doesn’t enjoy it at all, I would love to be able to knock back a few Guinness, Murphy’s or O’Hara’s pints in the land of their origin & inspiration!
But that being said, this trip really isn’t about me. I would love to be able to create a memory for my wife that will last her a lifetime. I feel like this may be my best opportunity to adequately express how special and meaningful Anna is, and will always be, to me. Please help me to make this possible for her, because I don’t think there is anyone in the world that deserves this opportunity more than she does. Thank you for accepting and reading my entry!
