When I was a kid, every storybook I read had to contain a castle and a unicorn. It didn’t matter what the story was about as long as those two Very Important stipulations were met. What can I say? I knew what I liked. While I’m no longer six and my choice in books has broadened, I still think being able to tour a castle would be thrilling.
There is something so charming about the Irish countryside. The rolling green hills are beautiful and the accents are all kinds of sexy. That would be cool enough, but on top of that, there are old crumbling remnants of castles at the roadside! I would love a historical tour because I know I’d be wondering who use to live in those castles and what life used to be like there.
My great-grandfather immigrated to Canada from Ireland when he was a young man. While I didn’t have the chance to meet him, my grandma spoke about him often. I know Ireland always held a special place in his heart. I also have some other familial ties to the country. It would be interesting to see where that side of my family came from and perhaps do some detective work in that regard.
Touristy things, like kissing the Blarney Stone, are fun little adventures and great photo opportunities. But when I travel, I really enjoy trying to get a sense of what day-to-day life is like for people who actually live in my vacation destination. One of my favorite things to do is just go for a long walk around town, taking in the sights and soaking up the atmosphere.
I can imagine spending a day admiring the architecture in small town Ireland. I’m picturing narrow, winding cobblestone streets, quaint stone buildings, and gorgeous churches. I’d love to do a bit of shopping and grab a bite to eat (fish and chips, perhaps?) before continuing on my stroll. Depending on the time of year, maybe I would even be lucky enough to get in on a festival or some other local event.
I live in Canada, in a city where pretty much everything is shiny and new. For example, when a building begins to age, it often gets knocked down so that a new one can be built in its place. I really appreciate the rich history that can be found in places like Ireland, where perhaps people aren’t so quick to demolish the past.
Of course, no trip to Ireland would be complete without a visit to the pub! I’d love to sit back and relax with a pint. A place with live music sounds great to me, though a little sports bar would be fun too. When I see on the news how passionate people are about football (soccer) it never fails to amaze me. I’d love to witness that firsthand!
I accepted a long time ago that unicorns probably aren’t real – probably. But it would be pretty awesome to have a story about spending a night in a real live castle. Would that, by some massive stretch of the imagination, make me royalty? Probably not, but let’s pretend. Six-year-old me would be so jealous!
