It’s so easy to get lost in the daily grind – it could be work or school, maybe your parental role or even your relationship. Most of us have so much to be thankful for, but this sensation of treading water is enough to make anyone start to feel disconnected and alone. It’s important to take the time to step outside of the routine and live your dreams. I’m turning 29 this year and a trip to Ireland would be the perfect segue into the next chapter of my life.
A picture is worth a thousand words, but an experience is priceless. A dream, rolling shades of green cloaked in silver mist and a salty kiss of the sea, has always seemed too far away. How many calendars and coffee table books have fueled these desires? How many times have I researched flights only to feel my heart sink as the webpage re-loads the prices again and again. But low and behold, this magical trip to Ireland is just so close; I can almost taste it. The strong desire to connect with my heritage, and experience broader horizons could finally be realized, and I just might remember how to play again, to be myself, to laugh and love.
My mother and father were both adopted, so my family story doesn’t go back very far. One of the few things I know about my actual lineage, scrawled on old adoption papers, is that I have quite a bit of hearty Irish blood flowing through my veins. I may not know my biological grandparents, but I know the land I come from, and as I move through the seasons of my life, a chance to be a part of something so much larger than me, but so much a part of me could only serve as an incredible learning experience.
Ireland means a chance to know who I really am, to find myself. It means a place to be creative, to learn, to explore. To experience an adventure unlike any other. Ireland means letting go of the grind and getting in touch with a fresh new outlook. If writing in a new journal at sunrise won’t do it, an afternoon in an Irish Pub ought to set my head on straight!
I’m not sure what I’m most excited to experience first – the colors, the smells, the tastes or the sounds. But I am sure that Ireland is at the absolute top of my wish list for this upcoming birthday. To set foot in an actual castle is not only the stuff of fairy tales, but could be the actual content of my future. As I get up and go to work in the coming days, the day dream of Ireland will be stronger than ever. This is the year when I will be propelled head first into my fantasies by finally setting forth on the greatest story of self-actualization I’ve ever had the opportunity not only to direct, but to play lead role. This is the year I grab heaven in my own two hands and stay there for 6 whole days. This is the year I learn to say “YOLO” in – IRELAND!
