Excursion to the City Hall and the Vasa Museum, Stockholm
Day: Saturday at 1:30 PM

Excursion by coach with a local guide to the Vasa Museum. The Vasa warship was the glory of the Swedish navy, but it sank on its virgin trip in 1628. It was recovered 333 years later and now the ship and its recovered objects are on display. Continue to Stockholm City Hall where the Nobel Prize banquet is held every year. The visit will include both the Blue Hall and the Golden Hall.
 
Excursion to Bygdoy, Oslo
Day: Saturday at 9 AM
Duration: 3 hours

Excursion by coach with a local guide visiting the famous maritime museums in the peninsula of Bygdøy. We visit the Vikings Ship Museum with three well-preserved original Viking ships. Continue to the Kon-Tiki museum, with Thor Heyerdahl’s raft, and to the Fram Museum with the Polar ship, which was built for the Fridtjof Nasen’s expedition to the North Pole and later with Roald Amundsen to the South Pole.

At 10:30 you will meet your tour escort who will stay with you for the rest of the tour and your local Stockholm guide who will take you on a guided tour of the Swedish capital.  From Fjällgatan you will have the view of Stockholm spread out on 14 islands connected by bridges. We will visit Gamla Stan, the old city with its narrow cobbled-stoned lanes, charming small squares, medieval buildings in happy colours, the Cathedral, and the Royal Palace.  Afternoon free.

DAY 4 - THURSDAY - STOCKHOLM - HAMAR

Today we start the journey by coach towards Norway passing open landscapes, dense forests and glittering lakes. We stop in the city of Karlstad, the capital of the province of Värmland beautifully located on the shores of Lake Värnern, the largest of Sweden’s lakes. After crossing the border into Norway we continue to Hamar located by Norway’s largest lake Mjøsa.

DAY 5 - FRIDAY – HAMAR – LOM- GEIRANGER

First stop today is Lillehammer, where the 1994 winter Olympics took place. We continue north through the green, fertile farmland of Gudbrands Valley.

In Lom we stop to see the amazing wooden stave church dating back to the 12th century. Our route continues via Grotli to Geiranger. A photo-stop is made before descending the hairpin curves to the village by the fjord. The fjord and the surrounding mountains give a unique and fabulous backdrop to your stay.

DAY 6 - SATURDAY - GEIRANGER - BRIKSDAL GLACIER - BALESTRAND

Morning cruise on the UNESCO listed Geiranger Fjord with the impressive waterfalls ”the Bridal Veil” and “the Seven Sisters”.

Continue to Briksdal Glacier. The last part of the journey up to the glacier will be in the motorized open Troll Cars, allowing you to enjoy the full panoramic view.

After the glacier experience sit back in the coach and enjoy the views of mountains and fjords passing by as we drive towards Balestrand. Our route will take us through the Gaular Mountain National Park.

Late afternoon we reach the beautiful resort Balestrand located on the shores of the fjord and surrounded by high mountains. This unique spot is a good candidate for the most beautiful place on earth.

DAY 7 - SUNDAY – BALESTRAND- BERGEN

Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Ferry across to Hella and continue along the scenic coastal route to Manheller for a short ferry crossing to Fodnes. We then continue to Gudvangen, where we board a 2 hour mini-cruise of the Sogne Fjord, the longest and deepest fjord in the world. Marvel at the landscape as we sail into the Nærøy fjord – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with small farms scattered on the steep hillsides of the fjord, cascading waterfalls and towering snow-clad mountains.

Disembark in Flåm and we continue with one of the most exceptional rail road trips in the world, the Flam Railway. With breath-taking views at every curve it will take you up to the mountain station of Myrdal where you will connect to your train to Voss where the coach awaits our arrival and take us to Bergen.

Day 7 – Thursday – Bergen – Geilo area

Orientation tour of Bergen, taking us to the famous open-air fish market, stroll across to Bryggen where the traditional wooden medieval buildings still remain as in the times of the Hanseatic League. Time at leisure for shopping, having lunch and maybe taking the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for a stunning view of Bergen. In the early afternoon, we continue towards the Hardanger Fjord with its romantic landscape of fruit orchards and rounded mountains. We make a stop at the impressive Vøringsfoss waterfall with a vertical drop of 180 meters, before ascending the Hardanger Mountain Plateau, before reaching the Geilo area.

DAY 9 - TUESDAY – GEILO AREA – OSLO

This morning we head for Oslo, the capital of Norway, with arrival around noon. You have some free time for lunch before going on the guided tour of Oslo.

The guided tour takes you to the Frogner Park with the controversial sculptures of the famous Norwegian Gustav Vigeland. Other highlights of the tour area the Royal Palace, the medieval fortress Akershus, the modern Opera house, the City Hall etc.

Remainder of the day free to explore Oslo, the pedestrian street Karl Johan and the lovely shopping and restaurant wharf Aker Brygge.

We have recently returned from a wonderful excursion of 2 weeks planned by Emma Tancred.She was responsive, understood our objectives, and made great suggestions to customize our itinerary. . Emma arranged the car, the insurance, accommodations from B+B's to lovely hotels, a car and driver to Newgrange. Our self drive tour began after spending 3 days in Dublin; then on to the Wicklow Mountains, Kilkenny, Kinsale, Kenmare, Doolin, and Galway.. We have experienced Ireland in all its magic and wonder. Having just returned from our ten day tour of Scotland, I have had a few days to reflect on a wonderful journey. We were so impressed with the accommodations .con booked for us. Every one was exceptional. Our only suggestion for future travelers is not to stay in downtown Glasgow if you are driving a rental vehicle. We were given poor directions by the hotel staff and ended up driving around for about twenty minutes trying to find the parkade for which the hotel validated. We parked finally in one that apparently was the wrong one, and after a ten minute walk back to the hotel, were told they couldn’t reimburse us. It was 22£ that we needn’t have spent had the hotel clerk been clearer in her directions. To be fair, our information from the travel company did give directions to the appropriate car park, but a strange city can be confusing. It was a minor disruption in a fabulous trip. We had a great vehicle, and enjoyed the people, the food and the fabulous scenery along the way. Thanks Con for your sightseeing suggestions. We learned a lot of Scottish history. Some of the sites were closed for the winter, but we never ran out of things to see and do. The guest house owners were particularly friendly and helpful. We will return!

“2 day whirlwind tour of Dublin”

I recently had a short, whirlwind trip to Dublin, Ireland, on my way to Cardiff, Wales where I was traveling to take a 3 day course. Dublin was wonderful! My first visit! Loved it!! No problems!! Can't wait to return.

Interestingly, traveling over on Aer Lingus, the day after Thanksgiving, the flight was almost empty, for whatever reason. Only about 50 of us onboard. That made for excellent inflight service!

Weather was ok, nice sunny days, and a bit on the chilly side (low to mid 30's) but was not a problem. while I currently live in southern California and have adapted to the Mediterranean climate, I am from the Great Lakes and cold weather generally doesn't bother me. I adapted!

Maggie arranged for me to ride the "Hop on" bus which worked out very nicely! You can 'hop on' and 'hop off'' as you please, for 1 fare. Took the tour of Dublin the morning of my first full day there! Saw it all. Then, after returning to my hotel, the Davenport, which is quite charming, I bravely set out on foot to see what I could see. They speak English, and I can read a map, and I had a wonderful time exploring. :) I might add that I had ongoing problems trying to connect to any networks while there. The hotel network was down. Fortunately, I am able to function without the iPhone :) ...so I adapted and it all worked out. I stepped into a souvenir store and got on their network to send emails and photos home. Saw many places...Grafton St, the Cathedral, the Guinness Tour, Trinity College, the Book of Kell's tour, the Whiskey Tour, the National Gallery...I fit a lot into 2 days...

Yes, I will have to return when I have more time, because there is SO much to see! But I have learned to take advantage of the opportunities that life presents...so I jumped at this chance to see a little bit of Ireland!

it was pointed out to me before leaving that Ireland is on the Euro, and the rest of the UK is on the Pound...so I needed Euros for Dublin then got UK currency in pounds when arriving in Cardiff.

Can't wait to return... :)
